Spring Contest success in Crawley

On 25 February the band made the regular pilgrimage to The Hawth in Crawley to take part in the scaba Spring Contest.

To add a bit of extra challenge, this year LGB entered the first section, as well as in our regular berth in the second section.

The second section performance was first up, where we played Jonathan Bates’ ‘Ex Terra Lucem’. Adjudicator David Hirst placed us third of the three bands in the section – not quite the result we were hoping for!

We came off stage from our first performance and immediately into warm up for our second showing of the day – playing Gilbert Vintner’s ‘Triumphant Rhapsody’ in the first section. Evidently by now the pressure was off, and we were able to relax and enjoy the performance. Something must have made a difference anyway, because this time we were awarded:

First Prize – Test Piece
Best Horns (Angela, Sharon, and Shirley)
Best Basses (Alex, Roger, Alan and Chris)
Best Tenor Trombone (Peter Cowlett)
Best Bass Trombone (Jane Stewart)
Best Conductor (Ian Stewart)

The prize for Best March was taken by Egham Band, under Gareth Green.

The band now moves on toward the London and Southern Counties area contest, where we’ll be competing in the second section, to be held in Stevenage on Sunday 18 March. It makes a nice change for our area contest not to be coincide with England’s last game in the Six Nations Championship, so we’ll be (metaphorically) keeping our fingers crossed for good results all round that weekend.
